Inspired by the character of Una in Spenser's "The Faerie Queene", book 1.

I spent a whole semester making this gown, designing it based on elements of Elizabethan and Medieval English clothing - with a dash of Faerie dust thrown in.

"So faire and fresh, as freshest flower in May;
For she had layd her mournefull stole aside,
And widow-like sad wimple throwne away,
Wherewith her heavenly beautie she did hide,
Whiles on her wearie journey she did ride,
And on her now a garment she did weare,
All lilly white, withouten spot or pride,
That seemed like silke and silver woven neare,
But neither silke nor silver therein did appeare."
12.190-198

This is Una in her glory - the dragon is slain, her kingdom is restored. Spenser notes that she was dressed all in white, and I kept with that theme.

Her bodice has a cross to reflect the armor of her own Redcrosse Knight.
Her skirt is embroidered with three figures: her pet Lamb, her Lion-protector, and Redcrosse charging that fearsome Dragon.

This is absolutely gorgeous. I love the designs on the skirt. Is that stipple quilting or regular embroidery? The outer skirt looks like it's embossed. I would love to see more pictures of this.

I guess you could call this regular embroidery. I did use my sewing machine - but it was a regular sewing machine, so I had to sketch out the design before taking the needle to it. Lots. Of. Patience. That panel took the most time and effort of the whole project.

Cool thing about the outer skirt - it is a re-constituted bed spread. :-) I found it at a thrift store, and its design and shade were perfect! It's jacquard, actually, though it does look embossed in the picture. More photos are forthcoming!

Oh, and thank you!!
